When you start to think about travelling you are faced with the prospect for narrowing all the amazing places in the world to just a few. This blog looks at the Seven Wonders of the World.
1. Chichen Itza – Mexico. Dating back to the somewhere between the 10th and 13th century AD, Chichen Itza was built by the Maya civilisation. Its most iconic ruin is the Kukulcan’s Pyramid. It was built for astronomy. The ruins are incredibly intact and people describe visiting the site as stepping back in time.
2.The Colosseum – Rome. It was built in the 1st century AD and was the largest ampitheater in the world in roman times. It housed 45,000. It was used for various battles, 1000s of gladiators and animals were killed there.
3. Christ the Redeemer – Brazil. It was built between 1926 and 1931 and stands tall at 710 metres. It overlooks Rio de Janerio. It can be reached by the road via 222 steps or by rail, taking around twenty minutes. It represents the strong catholisim in Brazil.
4. Taj Mahal – India. Constructed between 1631 – 1653. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan had it made in memory of his wife, got this monument constructed in the memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
5. Great Wall of China – Bejing. It is 5,500 miles long, it was constructed between 476 BC – 221 BC and 1368-1644. It was built mainly to protect China from invaders. Many died constructing the wall.
6. Petra – Jordan. Constructed 2000 years ago. It is a city carved in the rock face by the Nabataeans. Romans took over in 100AD. The city is still very much intact.
7. Machu Picchu – Peru. The Inca people used the ruins in the 1400s but they predate this time. They are set on the Andean mountain top. They were rediscovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. It is possible to get a train or bus to reach the ruins.
These are amongst some of the best sights in the world for those that like to go and see history.
